The Edit, Episode 9
New World Symphony & Stormtroopers
Stormtroopers, R2-D2 and even a giant Chewbacca greeted guests at the New World Symphony gala that honored John Williams, the composer who helped make cinematic history by writing the music for major movies including Close Encounters of the Third Kind , E.T., Jurrassic Park and to explain the Stormtroopers, Star Wars. The New World Center was packed with prominent players including Ron and Rita MaGill, Adrienne Bon Haes and Marvin Ross Friedman, Alexa and Adam Wolman, and Marica Martinez Laas and Michael Laas. The orchestra played the symphony of songs with the corresponding movies projected on a giant screen and as a WALLCAST concert outside in SoundScape Park. As an enormous surprise to gasping fans, famed violinist Itzhak Perlman performed a piece from Schindler’s List,.
Furry is Fashionable
Angela Birdman hosted her stylish friends and their canine counterparts at Neiman Marcus in Bal Harbour at the Walk in Style for the Animals event. There, to support the Human Society of Greater Miami, were dog lovers including Jennifer Diliz, Dana Rhoden, Natalia Sol and Hadley Henriette. All were invited to be accompanied by their well-behaved dogs and proved that furry can most certainly be fashionable, particularly when shopping for designer shoes and enjoying truffle popcorn.
Manny Hernandez to Appear at Books & Books Bal Harbor
He’s been called the Polite Paparazzi, which is perhaps one reason why celebrities and socialites love having their photo taken by major photographer, Manny Hernandez. The long-time local – he was born, raised and educated in Miami – has compiled some of his most coveted photos from our city’s most celebrity-crazed decade – the 1990s – and produced a glossy book filled with thick pages featuring glamourous personalities. Inside, you’ll find Sylvester Stallone, the Bee Gees and Martha Stewart. You can find Hernandez, meanwhile, on Thursday at Books & Books, Bal Harbour where he will – no doubt with his understated humor and notoriously entertaining conversation – discuss his work and sign copies. Thursday March 7 at Books and Books in Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Avenue at 6:30 p.m.
