Conversation between artist Gary Simmons and exhibition curators Jadine Collingwood, René Morales, and Franklin Sirmans will kick off exhibition and Art Week opening and focus on how Simmons and his work have played a key role in situating questions of race, class, and identity at the center of contemporary art discourse. Simultaneous interpretation into American Sign Language, Haitian Creole, and Spanish will be provided. Visitors will gain a holistic understanding of the complex and profoundly moving work of this groundbreaking and influential artist.

Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Caribbean Cultural Institute kicks off a research and exhibition project focusing on performance art practices from the Caribbean and its diasporas, with a two-part program showcasing the rich creative and artistic contributions of Caribbean and Latinx artists to the American avant-garde.

“¡Fenomenal! Rompeforma 1989–1996,” is a documentary about Rompeforma: Maratón de Baile, Performance & Visuales, an experimental dance and performance festival that took place in Puerto Rico from 1989–1996. Screening  to be be followed by a conversation with film co-directors, pioneer choreographers, and performance artists from Puerto Rico, Merián Soto and Viveca Vázquez.

Vejigante decrépito is a live performance by Puerto Rican visual artist, dancer, choreographer, performer, and Rompeforma participant Awilda Sterling Duprey drawing on the figure of the vejigante, a folkloric character typical of Puerto Rican carnival celebrations.
