Under the mastery of design greats Phillip Lim and Rachel Roy, Grace Sun wasn’t always headed for a thriving career in fashion design. As the co-founder and Creative Director of a multi-million dollar internet business, Grace Sun was at her peak professionally, yet as both her career and fashion label prove, she is a woman who pushes boundaries. In the Spring of 2007 after 9 years in graphic design industry, Grace Sun produced her first collection, removing any doubt that she made a risky career move. Born to a mother who stimulated her love of the arts, Sun began designing her own clothes at an early age. Graduating from the University of Michigan with a concentration in graphic design, Sun founded her own company at the age of 24 but eventually tired of the lack of creativity in her position. Looking to transition her experience into a more creative profession, Sun enrolled in Parsons School of Design. While studying at one of the most prestigious fashion schools in the country, Sun joined the design teams of Phillip Lim and Rachel Roy. “It was hard starting from the bottom, but I knew I had to learn the business from the ground up. I needed to absorb all that I could from people who have proven to be successful in the fashion industry,” says Sun. “It’s not easy being an intern when you are in your thirties, but it motivates you to learn quicker.” Learning everything from pattern making to sewing a button, Sun gained knowledge that was invaluable when launching her namesake designer collection. Sun’s collection melds the designer’s two loves of fashion and graphic design, creating a harmonious balance of form and function. She plays on the dichotomies of the uptown chic vs. downtown cool, ornate elaboration vs. clean minimalism and the precious vs. hard edge. Sun’s design aesthetic is epitomized by feminine silhouettes paired with a masculine structuring.
