South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga uses performance to explore the concept of utopia and dystopia. Bursting with multicultural references that range from Xhosa folklore to hip hop, Ruga’s colorful costumes and sensuous choreography portray a world where identity is no longer determined by geography, ancestry or biology. Athi-Patra Ruga’s work has been exhibited around the globe, including at Performa, New York, Guggenheim Bilbao, Tate Modern, London, Venice Biennale and SFMOMA. This is his first appearance in South Florida. The bassX series is organized by José Carlos Diaz, Curator of Exhibitions and Leilani Lynch, Curatorial Assistant. Limited seating. Admission is free. Reservations are required. Doors open at 7 p.m.
