Holocaust Heroes: Fierce Females
Art ExhibitionsHolocaust Heroes: Fierce Females – Tapestries and sculptures by Linda Stein, an artist, activist, lecturer, and performer who explores gender roles and inspires compassion, empathy and bravery. In her new series, Linda Stein highlights 10 female heroes of the Holocaust who stood up to violence and oppression. Her tapestries honor these positive female role models, communicating who they were and what they did through variety of materials including fabric, metal, text and mixed media. Stein pointedly chooses to focus on female figures, traditionally neglected in heroic and historic narratives. Also on exhibit, Stein’s 20 Spoon to Shell box sculptures combine the shell and spoon, metaphors for nourishment and protection in the context of women in the Holocaust, within an amalgam of mixed materials, words and associations. Also showing: Two Holocaust remembrance books by Tatiana Kellner, generously donated by Gail and Stewart Appelrouth. View an artistic rendering of remarkable recorded reminiscences by the daughter of two Holocaust survivors. Gallery is open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and for all Book Festival events. Admission is free
