Intimate Brahms features Alexander Fiterstein, clarinet. Program: J. Strauss, Jr. : Roses from the South; Brahms : Horn Trio and Brahms : Clarinet Quintet. A beloved romantic, Brahms was able to condense the large-scale emotionalism of his symphonies into heartwarming and heartbreaking chamber pieces. His somber Horn Trio, spurred by his mother’s death earlier that year, exploits the melancholic side of all three instruments before they join together in a lively, uplifting finale. Brahms came out of retirement to compose his rich Clarinet Quintet—said to be his most profound chamber work—which is a true masterpiece in the skilled hands of Alexander Fiterstein. Schoenberg trades in his signature serialism for Viennese romanticism in his take on Johann Strauss’ delicate Roses from the South. Tickets are $15.
