Alexander Dumas was inspired in his play “La Dame aux Camelias” (The Lady of the Camellias) by the life of Marie Duplessi a beautiful and young courtesan in Paris of 19th Century. Marie was only 23 when she died of tuberculosis. Verdi was very much attracted by Dumas’s play whose argument used to compose La Traviata (The Fallen Woman).
