From sweeping romanticism to stark realism, come hear the best the City of Music has to offer. Mark Wigglesworth, conductor. Program includes R. Strauss: Serenade; Schoenberg: Transfigured Night; Brahms: Symphony No. 1. Brahms, plagued by Beethoven’s shadow, often lamented “the footsteps of a giant” behind him. With the nickname “Beethoven’s 10th,” Brahms’ first foray into the symphonic genre ultimately proved a highly-anticipated masterpiece all his own. A dramatic, foreboding start in the timpani unfolds into one of the most expressive and powerful symphonies of all time. Winds and strings each get time in the spotlight via a young Strauss’ delightful Serenade and Schoenberg’s revolutionary, pictorial gem based on a poem by Richard Dehmel. Saturday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets $45 to $140.
