The National YoungArts Foundation’s (YoungArts) tenth YoungArts Salon will feature a conversation and reading by American hip hop pioneer, visual artist and filmmaker Fab 5 Freddy, on the YoungArts Campus in Miami. The Salon will be moderated by James Allister Sprang (2008 YoungArts Winner in Visual Arts). Initially exploding onto the scene in the late 70s as one of the first Graffiti artists to exhibit his paintings internationally, Fab was key in getting the art world to realize that New York graffiti was spawning an art movement that would eventually give birth to street art. A true multidisciplinary artist, Fab also explored film, music and television projects, collaborating on the cult classic film Wild Style, producing rap videos for artists including Queen Latifah, KRS-One, and Shabba Ranks, and hosting Yo! MTV Raps, an assignment that established his image as one of the godfathers of the hip-hop scene. James Allister Sprang is an accomplished performer and emerging artist who has performed and shown in some of America’s most praised spaces. His latest project entitled Life Does Not Live, features a poet named GAZR (pronounced “Gazer”), recording a mixtape in his bedroom while navigating issues embedded in race and technology. 6:30 to 7 p.m. | Pre-Salon Cocktails; 7 to 8 p.m. | Salon. $35 general admission, $28 for YoungArts members, $20 for students
