Sammy Figueroa: A Tribute to the Music of Cal Tjader
Concerts & PerformancesSouth Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center presents Sammy Figueroa; A Tribute to the Music of Cal Tjader on Saturday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Multiple Grammy nominee and legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa is considered to be the premier percussionist in today’s Latin jazz. After more than twenty years as one of the world’s most sought-after sideman, playing with artists such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Mariah Carey, David Bowie and many others, Sammy found his own voice as an artist and has led several bands of South Florida’s finest virtuosos. His fourth album, Imaginary World on Savant Records, was released in June 2015. On this evening Sammy and the band will be paying tribute to the original ‘cool Latin jazz’ of vibraphonist Cal Tjader and the music he created with Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo. Tunes such as Salsoul, Mambo Terrifico and the Continental create a tropical atmosphere and will display Sammy’s dizzying multi-rhythmical virtuosity against the cool celestial sounds of the vibraphone. Expect an evening of exciting and very enjoyable Latin jazz. Tickets for Sammy Figueroa are $30 in advance and $35 on day of show.
