Tony and the Kings
Live on the PlazaConcerts & Performances, Events of the Week
Tony & the Kings are Antonio Rivera on vocals, guitar and percussion; Charles Gardner on keyboards; Danny Naval on congas and percussion; Eddie Garcia Jr. on drums; Matt Pyatt on bass; and Robert Smiley on saxophone. The group got together to play the Latin styles they love. Rivera leads the band with his high energy Spanglish soul in true Miami fashion. The bass, congas and drums blend perfectly, driving a Latin rhythm. Keyboards and horn lines rip synchronized melodies for the classic live big band feel.
Tony & the Kings bring new Miami Latin styles that reflect the band’s Puerto Rican, Cuban and African roots while remaining grounded in the group’s funk and soul foundations. Boogaloo, Latin soul, son, Afro-funk … These are just some of the styles you will hear on their records and at their live shows.
The release of “Piropo / Son Del Barrio” marked the band’s debut single on Miami’s Tiki Tumbao Records. “Piropo” is a playful, Latin soul, boogaloo song that features Rivera calling out his love for his girl. This is sure to be a dance floor favorite at your local funk and soul party. The B side, “Son Del Barrio,” is a Latin psych-funk keeper with a steady beat and B-boy ready breaks. This song is a good reminder why you always need to check the B sides.
Accompanying the release of the “Piropo / Son Del Barrio” 7-inch record is a music video that takes you on a walk through Little Havana with DJ Angelica Rose. Follow her as she heads to Magic City Soul Club in downtown Miami to spin 45s with Tony & the Kings.
Live on the Plaza is a series of outdoor concerts on our Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza for the Arts.
