Puccini’s melodrama about a volatile diva, a sadistic police chief, and an idealistic artist has offended and thrilled audiences for more than a century comes to the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Tosca, an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini with Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa is based on the original play of Victorien Sardou. This great musical drama was set in Rome of 19th Century, with the Kingdom of Naples’ control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. It contains depictions of torture, murder and corruption, yet also includes some of Puccini’s best-known lyrical arias, and has inspired memorable performances from many of opera’s leading singers. Saturday, 8 p.m. Sunday, 4 p.m. Tickets $27-$47.
