Viennese Decadence
Concerts & PerformancesFrom a city so richly steeped in tradition comes a collection of fresh hits by old favorites. Schubert—King of the Lied—harkens to a Mozartean era with his lyrical Violin Sonata. Representing the new regime, Webern explores the boundaries of tone color in his string quartet, and Schoenberg’s concise Chamber Symphony demands virtuosic playing from each member. Paul Wittgenstein, a formidable pianist who lost his right arm in World War I, commissioned unforgettable works for piano left hand by Ravel and Prokofiev, among others, but it’s Erich Korngold’s wistful and sentimental Suite that roots itself in the fiery film music that solidified it as an instant classic. Orion Weiss, piano; Kazem Abdullah, conductor. Program includes Schubert : Violin Sonata in D major; Webern : Five Movements; Schoenberg : Chamber Symphony No. 1; Korngold : Suite for Piano (Left Hand) and Strings. Tickets are $15.
