UM FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC WELCOMES GERARD SCHWARZ

The UM Frost School of Music has appointed Gerard Schwarz as Distinguished Professor of Music; Conducting and Orchestral Studies. The announcement was made by Dean Shelton G. Berg. Schwarz will assume his position in the fall of 2019, and he will be a full-time member of the faculty as Professor of Practice in the Department of Instrumental Performance. Internationally recognized for his moving performances, innovative programming and extensive catalogue of recordings, Schwarz is Conductor Laureate of the Seattle Symphony, and Music Director of the All-Star Orchestra, Eastern Music Festival, the Mozart Orchestra of New York, and Conductor Emeritus of New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival.

Antidote. a curated eco-conscious group of clothing brands, hosted The Real Real for a morning program of light breakfast bites and fashion at Antidote’s showroom. The Real Real’s chief authenticator Graham Wetzbarger gave a talk on luxury consignment and sustainability.

SAHARA SIDI WINS YOUNGARTS WRITING AWARD

Congratulations to Sahara Sidi, the 2019 YoungArts Lin Arison Excellence in Writing Award winner. The award, now in its second year, will provide Sidi with a $50,000 scholarship to be applied against the cost of tuition, room and board at an accredited school of her choice. “YoungArts has always been a place of opportunity, unlimited possibilities and support for me,” said Sidi. “YoungArts propels young artists forward with all the tools they need to succeed, and this scholarship is just one example of that.”

REMEMBERING MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS HS

The inaugural MSD Heroes Challenge at the Parkland Equestrian Center and Liberty Park attracted more than 1,200 participants. They competed either individually or as teams in the two-mile race of exciting and challenging obstacles, followed by a signature Heroes yoga class. Highlights included a heat for Parkland Buddies, a group dedicated to providing sport programs for children and young adults with special needs. Founded in 2018, the Heroes Challenge brings together South Florida communities in remembrance of the tragic day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

NEW ORANGE BOWL COMM PRESIDENT JOSE ROMANO

José C. Romano was installed as the Orange Bowl Committee’s 81st President and Chair recently at Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables. Romano has been a member of the Orange Bowl Committee since 2005 and succeeds Immediate Past President & Chair, Sean Pittman. Romano is the Chief Operating Officer of the Medical Center at Ocean Reef (MCOR), part of Baptist Health South Florida, and Assistant Vice President of Baptist Health South Florida. He will oversee the Orange Bowl Committee’s continued commitment to the South Florida community, including a full slate of events, highlighted by the Capital One Orange Bowl on January 1, 2020. MADD KICKS OFF UPCOMING WALK LIKE MADD

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Broward County hosted a VIP Kick-Off Party for the 9th Annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K taking place on April 28. The Walk has raised over $1.75 million since Founder and Volunteer Chair Heather Geronemus launched it in 2011. 11TH ANNUAL BILZIN SUMBERG CARES PROJECT DAY

Attorneys, employees and family members of Bilzin Sumberg joined together at the Comstock Elementary School in Allapattah for the firm’s 11th annual Bilzin Sumberg Cares Project Day. Partnering with the United Way of Miami-Dade, the volunteers helped to create two new outdoor learning spaces for the school’s students, painted motivational murals throughout the building and refinished the basketball court.

DJ Khaled and wife Nicole Tuck threw the ultimate birthday bash with an celeb-filled soiree at the Perez Art Museum Miami. Guests included Meek Mill, Cuba Gooding Jr., Larsa Pippen, Swizz Beatz, Patricia Fields and 21 Savage for a private dinner, fashion show and party featuring ultra-premium, limited edition CÃŽROC Black Raspberry cocktails. SMDCAC DIRECTOR ERIC FLISS RECEIVES AWARD

Eric Fliss, Managing Director of the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center received a Knight Arts Champion Award recognizing those who have played key roles in fostering the arts sector. Fliss will distribute the $10,000 award between two organizations: The Miami Youth Ballet and The Carbonell Awards.

LOCUST PROJECTS HOSTS 20TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER

Miami’s longest running alternative nonprofit art space, Locust Projects, honored Founding Board Chairs Dennis & Debra Scholl and Founding Artists Elizabeth Withstandley, Westen Charles and COOPER at their 20th Anniversary Benefit Dinner. Co-chaired by Munisha Underhill and John Joseph Lin, the sold out event drew 150 friends and supporters of Locust Projects and was sponsored by Art Miami, Fendi, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Northern Trust, Phillips, TOD’S, and Vhernier.
