A major component of a healthy exercise program is flexibility training. Flexibility by definition is the range of motion possible for a joint. When performing flexibility training exercises, slowly stretch muscles to the point of tightness, but not to the point of pain. Hold the stretch for at least 20 seconds. It is ideal to perform the stretch for 30-60 seconds. Be sure to breath through the stretch and avoid holding your breath. Examples of flexibility training are the different varieties of Yoga and Pilates exercises.
