Muscular Body As Living Art
Out of the hundreds of people who tried to get tickets for the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s “The Muscular Body as Living Art” live one-day exhibition, a lucky 255 guests got in to see the amazing display of the human physique, as bodybuilders posed as iconic sculptures such as Rodin’s The Thinker, Myron’s Discobolus, Michelangelo’s David, and Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne; and even J. Howard Miller’s 1942 bicep-posing female factory worker in the We Can Do It poster.
The 50-minute live exhibition, presented by the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University, and the 2009 NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships, took guests on a tour through art history, from classical Greek and Roman times through pop art. Nova professors of communications, athletic training, biology and dance each offered their perspective on the works, comparing them to the bodybuilders’ poses.
