Mission Statement

The Kampong, located on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, Florida, is a 13-acre botanical garden which emphasizes rare and unusual varieties of fruit and flowering trees, palms, and other ornamental plants. It is the former home and garden of Dr. David Fairchild, one of America’s most distinguished botanists, horticulturists and plant collectors, and his wife Marian, daughter of Alexander Graham Bell. The Kampong was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Sweeney, of Washington, D.C., who are credited with preserving the property. In 1984, Mrs. Sweeney gifted The Kampong to the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG), a not-for-profit organization which was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964.
