Art Miami 2014
Art Miami is the Magic City’s oldest art fair, celebrating its 25th year of bringing art to Miami. Now, under the direction of Nick Korniloff and Pamela Cohen, Art Miami has become one of Art Week’s most prestigious fairs, rivaled only by Art Basel itself. This year’s fair benefits the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), dedicating its VIP opening to the museum.
In this piece, we hear from collectors Robert and Diane Moss, Marvin Ross Friedman, Ira and Roni Elegant, and Arnold Mittelman. We also learn from PAMM director, Thom Collins, about why Art Miami is tops on his list of Art Week fairs. Additionally, we receive insight from Venice Biennial artist, Victor Matthews, Ocean Drive magazine founder turned artist, Jerry Powers, and wood sculptor, Randall Rosenthal.

Julian Schnabel Master Workshop
Bringing together the work of French artist Francis Picabia (1879-1953), American artist Julian Schnabel (b. 1951), and Danish artist Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (1863-1958) for the first time in the United States, the exhibition Café Dolly: Picabia, Schnabel, Willumsen will be on view at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale as part of its Miami Art Week exhibition.
Schnabel was in town to hang the exhibition, which includes several of his works that have never been displayed.
SocialMiami’s Aaron Glickman received rare access to Schnabel, and created this documentary short of the experience.
Daniel Arsham Opening at Locust Projects
SocialMiami covered the Locust Projects opening night for Welcome to the Future by Daniel Arsham. The daring installation is sure to be the talk of Art Basel/Miami Art Week.
Arsham’s installation replicates an architectural dig in the gallery’s floor and holds thousands of calcified artifacts of 20th century media devices, including boom boxes, electric guitars, cameras, blackberries, Nintendo controllers, VHS tapes, Walkmans, film projectors, etc. all rendered in crystal, volcanic ash and other minerals. The trench presents the recent past as archeology, a world of technological objects whose obsolescence was built into their design, preserved like petrified wood or the figures of Pompeii.
