Rubell Collection Leaves Wynwood for Allapattah
The Rubell Family Collection is moving its world-renown collection of contemporary art from Wynwood to Allapattah, where it will open a 100,000 square-foot facility. The new location – at which 80 percent will be publicly accessible – will be renamed the Rubell Museum to emphasize its public mission and welcome audiences to see its contemporary art.
Don and Mera Rubell, today with their son Jason Rubell, have since 1965 amassed one of the world’s most significant and far-ranging collections. Their museum — encompassing 7,200 works by more than 1,000 artists – helped pioneer the model for sharing private collections have contributed to Wynwood’s place in leading the art world.
Since the beginning, the Rubells have focused on finding artists early in their careers and those who have been overlooked. They were among the first to acquire work by renowned contemporary artists, supporting some at a critical moment in their careers, including Jean-Michel Basquiat,Cecily Brown , Keith Haring, Rashid Johnson, Hayv Kahraman, Jeff Koons, William Kentridge, Yoshitomo Nara, Cindy Sherman, and Mickalene Thomas. They’ve also incorporated public programs, including a partnership with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which engages thousands of students every year. The museum also hosts curatorial training internships and artist residencies.
The space will be transformed by Selldorf Architects.
Nu Waves for Swim Week
Miami’s World Red Eye Founder, Seth Browarnik is partnering with Michele Addison to debut Nu Wave Swim, a series of runway shows and fashion events at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden during Miami Swim Week. From July 11th to 14th, brands such Tori Praver, Gottex, Revival, Red Carter, Bleu Rod Beattie, and Parke & Ronen will show their collections, with an emerging designer swim show on the final day. Nu Wave Swim will have a plastic-free policy at the venue. And it’s collaborating with clean ocean-advocacy group, Miami Water Keeper. Also on site, food and beverage offerings by restauranteur Michael Schwartz, wellness activations by Sacred Space and Barry’s Bootcamp, and a Fashion For Breakfast panel co-produced by Soho Beach House.
Mangos on Lincoln Road
Chef Allen Susser is hosting a mango event in a collaboration with The Lincoln Eatery and Taste of Redland. At this family-friendly day, each of the eatery’s 13 food purveyors will create a mango inspired dish amidst live music, food samplings, games and demonstrations. Come and sample as many recipes as possible through a fun Bingo style game called M-A-N-G-O where one crosses off squares as they taste for a chance to win prizes.
Taste of Redland works with over 250 farms in Miami-Dade County’s historic agricultural district, and will offer for this event a variety of fresh-picked Redland-raised tropical fruit, including lychee, mango, avocado and passion fruit for tasting and purchase.
