MAM Contemporaries Present Michael Genovese

Bal Harbour Art Nights provides chic venue where fashion & art combine

Michael Genovese

The Bal Harbour Art Walks are launching their second season tonight at the Bal Harbour Shops. Joining the fashionable art event is the Miami Art Museum (MAM). Its MAM Contemporaries group is presenting Michael Genovese at 100% Capri.

“We hope everyone will come visit us at 100% Capri and contribute to Michael Genovese’s ongoing Public Scribings project,” said Leann Standish, MAM Deputy Director for External Affairs. “Michael Genovese places these aluminum sheets in public places, allowing them to collect the writings and drawings of those who pass by. He then transcribes the marks into a single document, translates the texts across different languages (Spanish, English, and Creole, in the case of the Miami works), and then methodically engraves them into nickel-plated “tableaux.” Michael’s Tableaux was the MAM Young Collectors Council’s first purchase for the Museum’s permanent collection.”

External events are nothing new for the MAM Contemporaries, a group known for hosting dynamic events. The Contemporaries are a support organization of the museum designed for young professionals curious about Miami’s constantly evolving art scene. Miami artist Genovese fits right in with this objective.

Genovese’s recent exhibitions include Between Here and There: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Permanent Collection, Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL (2011); South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Miami, FL (2011); Write Now, Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, IL (2011); New Work Miami 2010, Miami Art Museum (2010); The Island, Flagler Memorial Island, Art Basel Miami Beach, OHWOW/LAND (2010); It’s not the heat, it’s the humility, OHWOW, Miami, FL (2009); Institutionalized, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago, IL (2008).

His work has been featured in I:D Magazine, London, UK, L’Officiel, Paris, FR, El Pais, Barcelona, Spain, El Nuevo Herald, Miami, FL, ARTLIES, The Upset: Young Contemporary Art, Berlin, DK, and New Underground Art, London, UK.

Upcoming exhibitions include Materialism at OHWOW during Art Basel Miami Beach (2011) and Michael Genovese, P.S. at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Miami, FL (April 2012).

To learn more about Genovese and the MAM Contemporaries come to their exhibition at Bal Harbour Art Nights at 100% Capri on the second floor of the Bal Harbour Shops. It’s one of several wonderful art events and lectures happening that night at Bal Harbour.
