Breakthrough Miami – a tuition-free educational program on Saturdays and in the summer, for high-potential motivated students from under-resourced backgrounds – held its first “Support-A-Scholar Celebration” at the de la Cruz Collection in the Miami Design District. In attendance were nearly 400 people, including parents from Breakthrough Miami’s site school partners: Ransom Everglades School, Palmer Trinity School, Miami Country Day School and Carrollton School for the Sacred Heart.

Artist Jim Drain, joined by his girlfriend, artist Naomi Fisher, painted silk scarves and engaged the Breakthrough students in a “Linked Heroes” project. Their artwork – as well as self-portraits by the Breakthrough Miami students – decorated the space.

Notable guests included: Carlos and Rosa de La Cruz; Jeff Miller, Breakthrough Miami and Ransom Everglades board chair; Julianne McDowell, Breakthrough Miami board member and event chair; Carlos de la Cruz Jr. and wife, Claudia; Sergio Gonzalez of the University of Miami and Breakthrough Miami board member, with wife Patricia Andreu; Matt Haggman of the Knight Foundation and wife Dannet; Gigi and Randy Whitman; Tom Reid, head of school at Palmer Trinity School; Gary Butts and Sheryl Piper, of Miami Country Day School.
