An Exciting Season is Upon Us
These performances are just a taste of a full-season lineup that will include many more presentations, including jazz from around the world; theater works both intimate and spectacular; shows for children and their families; the latest in contemporary dance; experimental multimedia shows and beloved classics; popular entertainment spanning top-selling recording stars, acclaimed cabaret artists, favorite comedians, and much more.

The Joffrey Ballet
March 26 – 27 @ 8pm
“Swift, sinuous choreography and the superb ensemble of youthful dancers” (The Washington Post) are the hallmarks of The Joffrey Ballet. The company has long been known as a transformational force in American dance, having notched an astonishing number of “firsts”: the first dance company to perform at the White House; first to appear on television; first American company to visit Russia; first classical dance company to go multi-media; first to commission a rock ‘n’ roll ballet; and the first and only dance company to appear on the cover of Time magazine.

Prokofiev “Romeo and Juliet”
March 26 – 27
The Cleveland Orchestra closes its 2010 Miami Residency season with performances of Sergei Prokofiev’s passionate Suite from Romeo and Juliet led by guest conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. Argentine-born pianist Ingrid Fliter will perform Frédéric Chopin’s romantic Piano Concerto No. 2 as part of this program.

Lang Lang and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra

“The hottest artist on the classical music planet” (The New York Times), Lang Lang has become the pianist of his generation. The 26-year-old plays sold-out concerts all over the world, and was viewed by over 5 billion people in August 2008 during the Beijing’s Olympics opening ceremony. He comes to play at the Knight Concert Hall in splendid company—with the “awe-inspiring” (Berliner Zeitung) Schleswig Holstein Festival Orchestra, which was founded just over two decades ago by Leonard Bernstein and is comprised of the world’s finest young musicians under the age of 27. Leading the youthful players is the veteran and widely acclaimed German conductor Christoph Eschenbach, whose music-making is characterized by a “wide-ranging imagination and the fearless taking of interpretative risks” (Playbill).

Michel Camilo, the Dominican-born winner of a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, is a virtuoso pianist with technique to spare, who flavors his tunes with the spice of Caribbean rhythms and jazz harmonies.
Alfredo Rodriguez, the Cuban born 23 year old, is a Quincy Jones discovery. His amazing improvisational skills and beautiful artistic soul represents a new generation of world class artists.

The acclaimed star of the Adrienne Arsht Center’s very first Broadway musical, The Light in the Piazza, returns with her lushly romantic and riveting cabaret entertainment. Singing songs ranging from contemporary pop to beloved classics of stage and screen, Christine Andreas has a “distinctive, gorgeous voice that illuminates the mood and meaning of each song through her considerable acting skills” (The Miami Herald).

The seductive and tempestuous gypsy, Carmen, Captures the heart of a young soldier, Don Jose. He sacrifices everything to be with her. Now a fugitive on the run, his life is in ruins. Unfortunately, she is drawn to the dashing matador, Escamillo, and casts Don Jose aside, which seals her fate. In his passionate confrontation with Carmen outside the bullring, Don Jose’s pleas for her to take him back are met with cold rejection…and the tragic murder that concludes the opera devestates audiences as much today as it did in 1875 when Carmen first premiered.

The Adrienne Arsht Center will present Family Fest, a free series featuring family-friendly out-of-doors activities and performances. The performances, hands-on demonstrations, and mini-workshops will provide active and engaging opportunities for parents to share with their children, while introducing “up-close” involvement in the performing arts. Families can make a puppet, learn a song, or try out a few new dance moves, while learning about the arts and other cultures.
