Arsht Center to Host Presidential Hopefuls
The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami will be the site of the first Democratic presidential debate, NBC News announced last week in a story on its website.
The network, reports Alex Seitz-Wald, will host the first official debate of the primary season along with MSNBC and Telemundo. On June 26 and 27, the debates will air live from downtown Miami across all three networks from 9 to 11 p.m.
“Miami is an international melting pot of cultures and ideas, so it’s fitting that the first presidential debate of the upcoming election season will take place in the heart of our urban core,” says Alyce Robertson, Executive Director of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. “The Adrienne Arsht Center has become a fixture in Miami’s arts and entertainment community, and now the rest of the country will catch a glimpse of the venue’s beautiful design and the surge of activity taking place in our Downtown. This type of national exposure is invaluable when it comes to showing off our city and enticing people to visit, invest and relocate here.”
At the time of its report, NBC said that 18 candidates have qualified, meaning they’ve registered at least 1 percent support in at least three polls or have collected at least 65,000 online donations.
“The debate is expected to be a defining moment in Democrats’ nomination battle to take on President Trump,” Seitz-Wald wrote in the piece that also states the Arsht Center was designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli, was opened in 2006, and stages nearly 400 events each year in addition to free events for the community and an education program serving nearly 60,000 children a year.
