Book Fair - Pivot Points III - DawnTown - NWS
Amy Rosenberg is an attorney and arts and environmental advocate who founded the Arsht Center’s young patrons group and is the co-founder of the environmental non-profit organization Dream in Green. Amy is a member of Art Basel’s Junior Host Committee and sits on the boards of LegalArt, the Funding Arts Network, New World Symphony’s executive committee and the Florida Association for Women Lawyers.
The New World Symphony continued to shake up its repertory with the presentation of the sold- out “Flying Colors,” a grand symphonic experience that repeatedly had the rapt audience on its feet. Principal Guest Conductor Alasdair Neale led the orchestra through four works, the best of which, John Adams’ The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra and Finding Rothko by under thirty composer Adam Schoenberg, captivated the audience and made a compelling case for twentieth and twenty first century music.
Friends of New World Symphony, the hip young patrons group, continued the evening at the W Hotel where they were treated to cool jazz in a hot and swanky setting. Guests nibbled on light bites courtesy of Solea
The Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB) presented the film Who Killed The Electric Car in the Miami Beach Cinemateque as part of their monthly Green Cinema series. Attendees expressed audible frustration during the film as it became evident that the auto industry put the brakes on electric vehicles for economic reasons. The film was followed by a Q&A with Alan Miller, head of the Electric Car Club of Miami-Dade County.
The Arsht Center pulled out all the stops during their gala-style event that highlighted their upcoming season. Fabulously-attired guests lined up at Barton G’s appointed food stations to taste cured olives, risotto and duck while viewing videos that showcased the beauty and athleticism of Tel Aviv’s Batsheva dancers. An African dance troupe and sultry flamenco dancers livened things up with hip-shaking performances.
Hundreds of literary types gathered for the launch of The Miami International Book Fair at downtown’s Ecco pizzeria. The Book Fair, now in its twenty-sixth year, promises an all-star list of authors. Mitch Kaplan informed the audience that Al Gore, Barbara Kingsolver and Margaret Atwood were confirmed authors. The fair graces downtown Miami November 8 – 15th.
Pivot Points III opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. The works displayed mark a critical moment in the development of the artists’ work and turning points in contemporary art. One of the standouts was Fircrotch by artist Rita Ackerman. The attendees, including Rosa de la Cruz, Bernice Steinbaum and artist Karen Rifas
One of Miami’s most exciting urban planning competitions is back. This year, the folks behind DawnTown have a call out to creative folks to imagine a new station for Downtown Miami’s elevated public transportation system, Metromover, on the north edge of Museum Park.
The jury includes: Terry Riley, Director of the Miami Art Museum, Gillian Thomas, President of the Miami Science Museum, Mera Rubell of the Rubell Family Collection, Dennis Scholl, Program Director of the Knight Foundation and Harpal Kapoor, Director of Miami-Dade Transit.
