“LAND” – ONE NIGHT ONLY

Tuesday, December 1 at 9 p.m.

Photographer Jordan Doner’s “omni-cultural” interactive installation begins when you enter a cavernous interior space with billowy parachute silk, infinity mirrors, videos and a cast-of-characters dressed in architecturally cut nude bodysuits screen-printed with Doner’s photos of idealized nudes. The bodysuits are worn by high-fashion models, characters who fall outside the realm of conventional beauty, and cross-gendered males and females wearing opposite gendered images. Pass through a narrow slit into a stylized, landscaped “Back Chamber,” to become the subject of Doner’s photographic work, surrounded by the characters in the bodysuits. At the right moment, Doner will capture the image on his camera, forever memorializing the moment.

Thursday – Saturday, December 3 – 5

Francesco Clemente’s monumental work A History of the Heart in Three Rainbows, a remarkable 180′ long suite of large scale watercolor paintings, launches the Goldman Warehouse’s independent exhibition program. The work carries on Clemente’s ongoing project of transforming spiritual life experience into art with the rainbow serving as the bridge that brings things together and connects different worlds. The artist’s affinity with watercolor derives in part from its immediacy. He cites one of Allen Ginsberg’s mantras, “First thought – Best thought.” There is no going back with watercolor, as it is impossible to correct. The Clemente exhibition is presented in partnership with Deitch Projects, New York. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will present Yayoi Kusama at Fairchild on view through May 30, 2010. Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is known for her distinctive sculptures and paintings that involve hand-worked repetition and bold patterning. Three groupings of work will be exhibited: the exuberant new sculptural ensemble, Flowers that Bloom at Midnight (2009), vividly painted, giant cast flowers between 5 and 16 feet in height; a group of her classic Pumpkins; and Guidepost to the New Space, a multi-part floating work specifically conceived for Fairchild, consisting of rounded forms in fire-engine red with white polka dots protruding from one of Fairchild’s large garden ponds. This will be the first time anywhere in the world that all these sculptures have been shown together in an outdoor setting. “Yayoi Kusama at Fairchild” is part of an annual exhibition series in support of the Garden’s conservation work and educational and outreach programs. Fairchild is open daily (except Christmas) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for children 6-17 and free to Fairchild members and children 5 and under.
