INVENTORY 04: TIME

December 2 – 8, 2013

Design collective and series Inventory presents their fourth exhibition, TIME, as part of Art Basel Miami Beach 2013. TIME will debut in the Design District on November 26th, 2013, with events lasting through the entirety of Basel until its duration on December 8th. A multidisciplinary exhibit combining a broad range of mediums, TIME explores the concept of time and the different ways in which it can be formatted and understood. Though time is ultimately a man-made idea—useful to define might actually be movement—it is this very fact that renders it special and worth exploring through design: it speaks not only to its own fragility, but to humanity’s. The disparate designers in TIME are inspired by a range of materials and ideology, but find themselves connected through their awareness of objects’ functions as signifiers of particular, emotional spaces in time. After a December 5th cocktail preview, TIME will be open to the public from December 2nd through December 8th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

MIAMI SAYS ART 2

December 2 – 8, 2013

Last year’s Art Basel Week kicked off with a much talked-about tribute to Miami’s arts pioneers – alongside the city’s new cultural visionaries – with the retrospective of visionary artist Martin Kreloff’s 1976 “Miami Says Art” (which 36 years ago brought together the city’s then up-and-coming arts luminaries to look into his camera and exclaim “ART”). During last year’s Art Basel Week, Kreloff reunited cast members from his original 1976 show alongside Miami’s current crop of cultural champions, all coming together to help create a new time-capsule honoring Miami’s arts evolution, and providing a window into the city’s bright future as an art destination. MIAMI SAYS ART 2 features a wall series of portraits by Kreloff, with some of the original 1976 cast alongside Miami’s new museum directors, gallerists, performing arts leaders and directors of cultural institutions (all once again looking at the camera and proclaiming “ART!”). Kreloff has also collaborated with Miami artist Gustavo Oviedo on a black-box installation featuring video, projections and sound art, “Art Euphoria” melding photos, original artwork, video and sound recordings for an experiential walk-through time capsule. Presented by The Mayfair Hotel & Spa Miami, MIAMI SAYS ART 2 ushers in Art Basel Week 2013 and is on view Dec. 2-8, 10:00am-8:00pm (free and open to the public) at the hotel’s exquisite Palm Terrace, 3000 Florida Avenue, in the heart of historic Coconut Grove. The Mayfair Hotel celebrates its 30th anniversary year throughout 2014 and is the only Gaudi-inspired boutique hotel in the U.S., boasting unparalleled artistic craftsmanship that makes guests feel like they are immersed within a living work of art.

PIOTR UKLAŃSKI: ESL

December 4, 2013

Appropriating the acronym for English as a Second Language, Piotr Uklański’s upcoming exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art will be titled ESL. As Uklański embraces this acronym as a descriptive signifier of his own status as an immigrant not fully integrated into American society, this title also points to his unconventional conceptual and aesthetic art practice, an oeuvre that suggests irreverence towards mainstream art. His exhibition will showcase a precise but eclectic selection of works from his wide-ranging practice, which includes sculpture, painting, photography, performance, and film. Combined with selections from the collection of the Bass Museum of Art, Uklański’s works will address issues related to his ESL status—whether through their outsider relationship to American pop culture, their aspirations over the fabled American Dream, or through Americanized references to Polish history and art. Piotr Uklański: ESL will be on view during Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 with a VIP reception on December 4, 2013 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Special museum hours will be: Thursday, December 5 through Monday, December 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and regular museum hours thereafter. The exhibition runs through March 16, 2014.

December 4 – 7, 2013

The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) and Visionaire will present the world premiere of the new short film installation “A Portrait of Marina Abramović” by emerging artist Matthu Placek. An internationally celebrated pioneer of performance art who was the subject of a blockbuster retrospective in 2010 at The Museum of Modern Art, Marina Abramović is best known for works that explore the physical limitations of the body, as well as the body’s potential to be a vehicle for spiritual transformation. Created by Placek, A Portrait of Marina Abramović marks the international premiere of his first major work. The 3-D film installation documents Marina Abramovic standing in the middle of a derelict building in Hudson, New York, that will be converted into the Marina Abramović Institute. The camera pans to capture the volume of the space, while evoking a sense of the life of the artist, her keen sense of transition and the imminence of renewal. Accompanying the image is an ancient Greek song, translated and recorded by the world-renowned Serbian singer Svetlana Spajić, recalling the cycle of birth, maturity, decay and rebirth. Free public screenings will be held during Art Basel in Miami Beach, December 4 – 7, 2013, every 15 minutes beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Jewel Box on the YoungArts campus.

ART ON THE MOVE: ANGEL OTERO

December 5, 2013

Now celebrating its 15th year presenting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to announce that painter Angel Otero has been commissioned to create work for Art on the Move, part of the organizations’ ongoing public commissions initiative. The New York-based Puerto Rican artist embeds personal history in his densely stratified abstract paintings. Otero’s investigational process begins with thickly layered compositions painted on large planes of glass. These “oil skins” are then peeled off in sheets and adhered wrong-side-up to canvas, revealing layers of underpainting and turning the original image inside-out. Otero’s artwork will appear on the backs of Miami Beach buses and at Miami Metro Rail stops in December 2013. There will be a reception for Art on the Move that will take place on Thursday, December 5th from 7-10pm.

FRANCES TROMBLY: OVER AND UNDER

December 5, 2013

Over and Under is an exhibition by Miami-based artist Frances Trombly. A floor-to-ceiling scaffold in the Project Room is the framework for a handmade canvas which is rhythmically woven in and out, up and down, throughout the structure, visually echoing industrial fabric production. Variables within the fiber hint at its fabrication process: irregularity, asymmetry, glitches, pulls, and tears reveal the manual labor of weaving, standing in contrast to the industrial perfection of commercial cloth and emphasizing the artist’s intimacy with the material. There will be a reception in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach on December 5th from 7-10pm. The public will also have the opportunity to view this exhibit during extended gallery hours during Basel week, which will run from December 2-7 from 9:00am-5:00pm.

12 SHOES FOR 12 LOVERS

December 5, 2013

Entitled “12 SHOES for 12 LOVERS,” Sebastian Errazuriz’s exhibition features 12 fabulous shoe sculptures, each inspired by a real former girlfriend or lover. The sculptures are rendered with state-of-the art 3-D printing technology, through which the artist explores the boundaries between art and product design. A 3D printer converts a digital file into a three dimensional object that can be used for everyday life purposes. The “ink” is a plastic filament that melts under heat and is deposited layer upon layer via a stylus guided by the code in a digital file that can be easily modified to fit the desires of the end user. Errazuriz’s sculptures invite the audience to imagine a future of product customization in a world of on-demand consumption where every idea or fantasy might be rendered possible. The sculptures will be unveiled at a private cocktail reception on Thursday, December 5th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Melissa Pop Up Shop on 830 Lincoln Road. The exhibition will be open to the public through January 5, 2014.

BREAKFAST IN THE PARK

December 8, 2013

Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University hosts Breakfast in the Park. This event draws hundreds of art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world, many of whom are visiting Miami for Art Basel. Each year a noted sculptor is invited to speak. Guests enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, informal lecture and guided tours of The Sculpture Park as well as the exhibitions in The Frost Art Museum. This year’s featured artist is American sculptor John Henry, who has long been recognized as the artist who can transform the simplest of forms into complex visual statements. Whether they are situated in the land or as part of a cityscape, John Henry’s monumental abstract sculptures challenge notions of balance and equilibrium. A formalist at heart, his concern for line, shape and form is essential to the structure that is the basis of his work and the varied angles that define their recognizable configuration. The 10th annual Breakfast in the Park will take place on Sunday, December 8th from 9:30am to noon.

THE DISTRACTED EXHIBITION: A LECTURE BY CAROLYN CHRISTOV-BAKARGIEV

December 8, 2013

This lecture explores the question of the art exhibition as an embodied and “dis-tracted” archive (dis / trahere = to pull or to draw in another direction), and it focuses on how objects function in relation to the experience of witnessing -‐ the artist’s witnessing of the world, the viewer’s witnessing of the artwork, and even the art object’s witnessing of the spectacle within which it is caught and entrapped. The lecture starts at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by a reception. Free with museum admission.
