Bakehouse Art Complex Reunion Exhibition
Featuring the work of more than 20 of its alumni
Long before the visual arts completely transformed Wynwood Art District, attracting murals, galleries and the Second Saturday Art Walk, tech innovation, start-ups, craft coffee and beer, hot restaurants and celebrity sightings – back when Wynwood was an industrial area in an often forgotten corner of Miami – there was a thriving community of artists working and exhibiting in a former commercial bakery building – The Bakehouse Art Complex.
On Friday, February 13, 2015, The Bakehouse Art Complex will honor its roots as a pioneering visual arts start-up in Wynwood and welcome the community to celebrate the opening of its landmark “Reunion” exhibition. This exhibition pays tribute to the artistic vision that created one of Miami’s oldest and most venerated cultural hubs twenty-nine years ago and the subsequent work that this vision made possible.
Opening its doors in 1987 in the Art Deco American Bakeries Company building, the Bakehouse was founded in 1985 by a group of artists who lost space in Coconut Grove and needed to relocate. These founding artists repurposed the industrial facility into working artist studios and galleries, ensuring a permanent venue for local artists to explore their creativity and hone their artistry.
The Reunion exhibition celebrates the 29-year history of the Bakehouse, which has seen over one thousand resident artists and continued success as a stakeholder in the ever-growing Miami arts environment. The selection of artists included in the 2,600 square-foot Audrey Love Gallery show reflects the long and varied history of the Bakehouse and its role as an incubator for artistic careers – and the rise of the visual arts – in Miami over the years. Exhibition highlights include an opening reception, innovative art talk-concert hybrid presented in partnership with IlluminArts, a master class with Pablo Cano, and a closing reception. Artists featured in the show include: Pablo Cano, Xavier Cortada, Veronica Garcia, Suza Talbot, Maggie Davis, Carrie Sieh, Patricia Gutierrez, Christian Bernard, Ross Ford, Beatricia Sagar, Luis Diaz, John La Huis, Tracey Hagen, Richard Labarbera, Juan Greigo, Maria Sonia Martin, Robert Apfel, Marcos Valella, Gustavo Oveido, Armando Chagon and Henry Mar.
