Earth Day Events in South Florida
Proposed as a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, the first celebration of Earth Day was in 1970. Earth Day is now celebrated in more than 192 countries.
Groups all over South Florida will pay tribute to our planet in a myriad of ways, mostly through events that are family-friendly and that showcase the environment, conservation and recycling.
Today from noon to 4 p.m., the Village of Pinecrest will open its gates free to the public for a day of Earth Day activities for the entire family. The afternoon is devoted to workshops, food demonstrations, an eco-fashion show, green vendors, wild life shows, performances, crafts for the kids and lots more. Activities take place in the Hibiscus Room with a Whole Foods demo beginning at noon and a Dream in Green WE LAB at 2:15; in the Meadow see the eco-fashion show at 1:15; enjoy wildlife shows in the Petting Zoo at 1 and 3 p.m.; and performances by Fantasy Theater Factory at 1 p.m. and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony at 3.
While visiting Pinecrest Gardens, don’t miss Torrid Flora, an exhibition in the Pinecrest Gardens Gallery, curated by Ananda DeMello. Torrid Flora, on view through May 7, addresses climate change and revisits Aristotle’s Torrid Zone assessments, presenting a haunting view of our lush vegetation and plant life. Being the first to study the world’s climate, Aristotle divided it into three zones: frigid, temperate and torrid. Miami stands just above the line of Aristotle’s simple classification.

On April 22 celebrate Earth Day at Miami Beach Botanic Garden with a tour of the garden at 5:30 p.m., eco-friendly reception at 6, followed by a “State-of-the-Garden” address and a captivating panel of environmental experts, moderated by meteorologist David Bernard, talking about water.

Coral Gables’ Earth Day efforts on April 22 concern e-recycling. At Merrick Park the City of Coral Gables, together with STS Electronic Recycling, will provide onsite collection of electronic waste. Bring your old computers and other electronics for proper and safe recycling.

April 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., our beautiful planet will be honored by Miami Children’s Museum with a special Earth Day program. Learn to be aware of our environment and how to keep it safe and healthy. Taste food that is good for you and good for the Earth. Drum along with Drumming for Wellness and create fun art out of recycled materials as you focus on recycling, conservation and ways to protect our planet. General admission is $18; Florida residents $14, Museum members and children under 1 are free.
