Creating a Consciousness

Robert Allen Law joins forces with the Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup

One day, during his morning run along Key Biscayne beach, attorney Robert Allen of Robert Allen Law saw something that distressed him very much – junk. So rather than hemming and hawing about what should be done, or what could be done, Allen took action by becoming a national board member of Ocean Conservancy.

“I was simply aghast by the amount of trash,” said Allen from his corner office in the Four Seasons Office Tower on Brickell Avenue. “The beach is the place where the land mass intersects with the ocean, and it’s at that edge where we see the bad effects of man’s interaction with the environment. Ocean Conservancy is the organization that provided me with the best opportunity to make a real impact.”

A portion of that impact comes by way of the Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup. Robert Allen Law is a Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup partner and the entire firm volunteers for duty. “The goal of the cleanup is to plant a consciousness in people,” said Allen. “Miami is defined by its glitz more than its commitment to the long term. If we can focus Miami’s abundant means on how we interact with the ocean and design our policies to preserve what we have, then we will be a responsible community with a conscience.”

The 2007 Florida Coastal Cleanup will take place on Saturday, September 15th from 9 a.m. to Noon. Seventeen (17) locations in Miami-Dade County will become spotless, and those who participate will not only have the satisfaction of knowing that they participated in something positive, but they will also be invited to attend the Miami-Dade Beach Clean-up Volunteer Appreciation Party at Miami Seaquarium, sponsored by Robert Allen Law. There will be food, music, fun plus all the shows and exhibits at Miami Seaquarium. And, best of all, it’s free for volunteers who wear the wrist band provided by the site coordinators.

“All kinds of interesting people come out,” said Allen, “including school kids, religious groups, policemen and firefighters, the Boy and Girl Scouts. School kids who participate will receive community service hours. We need to make sure that every kid in America knows that the ocean is a treasure.”
