Accompanied by the NWSA Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alfred Gershfeld, the seven winners comprised of college and high school students, of the annual NWSA Concerto Competition have been announced and will present performances, ranging from stringed and wind instruments to voice, during the Concerto Competition Winner’s Concert. A panel of judges, comprised of stellar musicians with no affiliation to New World School of the Arts, was brought in to adjudicate the competition, which was held at the Wolfson Auditorium on the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus this year. After careful deliberation of approximately 25 contestants, the winners were selected to perform with the symphony orchestra. Judges looked for a range of components in the contestant’s performance, including but not limited to, musical expression and a good understanding of the repertoire and entire conductor’s score, appropriate use of technique based on the style of music, stage presence, quality of sound and phrasing, rhythmic clarity, tonal quality and control, projection, nuances, technical facility, articulation of notes and the potential for flexibility in case needed during the performance. Each year, the competition winners are awarded the chance to put their solo and ensemble skills to the test in this exciting exhibition of musical passion. Congratulations to performing winners Esther Chae, cello; David Fernandez, violin; Amanda Gonzalez-Piloto, soprano, Kristianna Jones, soprano; Jack Kessler, viola; Mikhail Marasigan, clarinet; and Gerard Ortega, tenor
