Donzetti’s L’Eilisir D’More
Concerts & PerformancesThe New World Opera Theatre Ensemble will present L’elisir d’more, the most popular of Gaetano Donizetti’s operas. The timeless melodrama contains one of the most famous and captivating tenor arias, “Una furtive lagrima.” The beautiful tunes come one after another throughout this opera, which contains both sharp comedy and heartfelt pathos. Guest director and singer Ardean Landhuis will direct this updated version of the opera and sing the pivotal of Doctor Dulcamara, the traveling salesman. The show takes place in a New England fishing village in 1943, just after the Great Depression and just before World War 2. The story is a love triangle between a single woman who owns the local fishing fleet, a young fisherman, and a Navy officer. The magical elixir is in reality Bordeaux wine. But a traveling salesman convinces the young fisherman that this elixir will help him win over his secret crush on the woman, who is essentially his boss. Performances are Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2. General Admission tickets are $10 and $5 for students and seniors.
