George Bernard Shaw’s masterpiece production, Major Barbara will be presented by college theater students at New World School of the Arts. Directed by guest artist and former NWSA faculty member, Andrew Noble, the popular play wittily explores the privileged world of the British upperclass, familiar to audiences of Downtown Abbey, against a background of social deprivation. The play centers on the formidable Lady Britomart Undershaft, who in order to keep up appearances, must find dowries for her two daughters and an inheritance for her son. The plot thickens with her quest to introduce her three children to their estranged father – her husband – a millionaire munitions manufacturer. Tensions rise as the elder daughter, Barbara Undershaft, a Salvation Army Major, contests with her father the “relationship between money, power and moral purpose”, decrying his belief that “there are two things necessary for salvation – money and gunpowder.” Performances are Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday & Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 Tickets are $12 general admission and $5 for students and seniors.
