Art Exhibitions, Events of the WeekNew World School of the Arts (NWSA) returns to The Kampong National Tropical Botanical Garden in Coconut Grove with a unique exhibition highlighting the importance of our environmental landscape. The show continues the tradition of a performative brunch, examining the language of Miami’s sub-tropical location through the lens of our landscape and our community.
The Future Ain’t What it Used to Be examines our culture’s ideas about preservation and the simultaneous projections of the future invoked in our attempts to manage the ever-changing landscape of South Florida. This year’s event offers artworks created by New World School of the Arts college students, under the guidance of, or in collaboration with artist and NWSA faculty member Don Lambert. Works, which range from the ephemeral to the concrete, feature pirate radio transmission, performances in the landscape, video, sculpture, drawing, and large site-specific installations will activate the lush garden, and former home of Dr. David Fairchild, noted botanical explorer. A VIP Brunch offers fresh fare and tropical mimosas created in response to the students’ artistic investigation.
This year’s event continues a tradition begun in 2003 by Lin Lougheed to showcase the work of local artists during Miami Art Week. Originally set at Casalin, this will be the second year New World School of the Arts will activate the Kampong in Coconut Grove. Lougheed, a sponsor of the arts and national philanthropist has been instrumental in getting NWSA visual artists highlighted and recognized during Art Basel. To date, New World School of the Arts is the only school to be officially listed in the Art Basel International Show delegation package. Special thanks go out to Lin for his continued support of NWSA students and to Craig Morell and all the staff at the Kampong National Tropical Botanical Garden, for so generously hosting NWSA again this year.
About The Kampong: Originally the bayside home of Dr. David Fairchild, The Kampong Tropical Botanical Garden is now one of five gardens in the U. S. National Tropical Botanical Garden system, and the only one located outside of Hawaii. The Kampong’s unique architecture and extensive plantings of tropical fruits, palms, cycads and flowering trees serve as a living classroom for academics, students and enthusiasts.

About NWSA’s Visual Arts division: Trained by nationally renowned practicing artists, students are encouraged to develop a personal, artistic and aesthetic vision while mastering their own technical skills in traditional and new media.
