Before the frey of Art Basel Miami Beach exhibits start to fill up your calendar, you can visit the Miami Design District on Saturday, November 9th during the monthly gallery walk for a preview of TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food at the historic Moore Building.

TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food, organized and produced by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) –a public body tasked with showcasing and promoting Spain’s culture and heritage at home and abroad–, explores, to mark the 500th Anniversary of Florida, the interaction between design and cuisine –two creative disciplines that are experiencing a boom in Spain and are establishing a major international profile. TAPAS, through more than 200 objects and instruments used in the preparation or tasting of food, from the more traditional to the most cutting-edge, and through videos and photographs, showcases Spanish design adapted to gastronomy. It is a spectacle of imagination and talent at the service of the sense of taste.

Curated by the designer and architect Juli Capella, TAPAS gives us a foretaste of design’s varied contributions to cuisine through three spaces: Kitchen –preparation and its utensils; Table –the objects for sampling the food- and Eating –the actual food design.

TAPAS brings together objects designed or manufactured in Spain only. It includes products designed by Spaniards and manufactured abroad, but also includes a selection of pieces by foreign designers produced in Spain. It focuses mainly on the past 25 years, with some nods to tradition. It includes the typical Spanish paella pan or the bota (wineskin), the botijo (a porous earthenware flagon that keeps water cool) and the porrón (a glass container with a drinking spout in its belly), three instruments for hygienically sharing drink. Modernity and the avant-garde are represented by some of the designs produced exclusively for leading restaurants such as the now defunct “el Bulli”, El Celler de Can Roca (designated the best restaurant in the world in 2013) or Mugaritz. The exhibition features the chef José Andrés, the disseminator of tapas in the USA through his Jaleo restaurant, as Chef Advisor.
