Florida Grand Opera and Advocates for Children and Families

Julia Lemigova and Laura Leon
Power couple Julia Lemigova and Martina Navratilova hosted an exclusive event held at the luxurious Lafayette Steakhouse in Miami, where the Real Housewives of Miami cast member performed alongside Laura León, the star of Florida Grand Opera’s recent original production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Lemigova has been training with internationally acclaimed baritone Louis Otey, performed Caro mio ben, a deeply personal piece she credits with helping her family through challenging times, including Navratilova’s recent battle with cancer and the couple’s adoption of two young children.
“Opera was my therapy,” said Lemigova. “It became a tool for resilience and healing during some of the hardest moments of our lives.”
The event honored two nonprofits close to their hearts, Florida Grand Opera (FGO) and Advocates for Children and Families (ACF) and marked the launch of Florida Grand Opera’s Miami Voice Club, a membership club that creates bespoke cultural experiences for opera lovers and supporters of the arts in Miami. Membership contributions to the club will support FGO programs that serve the wider community, benefiting over 30 nonprofits through the healing power of opera.  In a surprise announcement, Maria Todaro, General Director of Florida Grand Opera, invited Lemigova to have a role in FGO’s upcoming production of Carmen, which will take place at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in April 2025.
“Opera, with its saturation of high frequencies in the human voice, the overwhelming beauty of its sets, costumes, and ballet, the roaring sound of the orchestra, and the seamless integration of all art forms, has been a profound source of healing and connection for over four centuries. Long before we paid attention to immersive arts, opera was touching hearts and transforming communities across the globe,” said Maria Todaro General Director and CEO of Florida Grand Opera.
The event was produced for Florida Grand Opera and Julia Lemigova by Up To More Good, a company dedicated to empowering brands and individuals to harness the power of purpose, fostering meaningful impact within communities. It featured a specialty cocktail by Luneoir Tequila and Navratilova, donated one of her iconic tennis-inspired paintings to be auctioned for the benefit of both nonprofits. Advocates for Children and Families also received a special gift: tickets for families to attend FGO’s upcoming season.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital was named a Top Children’s Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit organization advocating for patient safety and assigning hospital grades.

“For the third year in a row, we have the honor of being recognized as a Leapfrog Top Children’s Hospital,” said Matthew A. Love, president and CEO of Nicklaus Children’s Health System, parent organization of the hospital. “This recognition highlights the unwavering dedication from our clinical and support teams of ensuring patient safety and compassionate care to the children and families we serve.”

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is one of eight children’s hospitals, and the only one in South Florida, to be selected as a Top Children’s Hospital. Nearly 2,400 hospitals were considered for the award, but only 134 Top Hospitals were selected.

The group, in recognizing the hospitals, considers infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors.

“Protecting patients from preventable harm is central to The Leapfrog Group’s mission,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has set the standard for patient safety, earning the prestigious distinction of a Top Hospital. This elite honor reflects the exceptional efforts of the entire team and places Nicklaus Children’s among the nation’s elite in health care. Congratulations to all who made this remarkable achievement possible.”
