The 34th annual Women’s Day Luncheon featuring Gail Sheehy, author of “Daring: My Passages,” is one of the highlights of the Alper JCC’s Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival. The luncheon and program, set to begin at 11 a.m., follow a morning of boutique shopping that opens at 9:30 a.m. The event is chaired by Cheryl Rosen.

In her memoir, “Daring: My Passages,” Gail Sheehy reveals the obstacles and opportunities encountered when she dared to blaze a trail in a “man’s world.”

She shares the story of her unconventional life as a plucky writer who dared to walk New York streets with hookers and pimps to expose violent prostitution; marched with civil rights protesters in Northern Ireland; and sought out Egyptian’s president Anwar Sadat when he was targeted for death after making peace with Israel.

Don’t miss hearing this world-renowned writer reflect on her desire, ambition and wanting it all — career, love, children, friends, social significance — but how she learned to wait to put it all together in midlife. Her fascinating story of shattering failures and stunning successes is a testament to resilience, smarts and daring.

Ms. Sheehy is the author of sixteen books, including the New York Times bestseller “Passages,” named by the Library of Congress one of the ten most influential books of our time.

Women’s Day 2014 is certain to be memorable with this acclaimed author’s engaging presentation, a delicious lunch and fabulous shopping at specialty boutiques. General admission is $60 in advance and $65 after October 15. Patron tickets are available for $75. Call 305-271-9000 ext. 268 or email ASantana@AlperJCC.org for tickets and information. Reservations are required.

A “Literary Circle Friend” receives a ticket to the Women’s Day Luncheon and 2 general admission tickets to ten requested Book Festival events, excluding Ari Shavit. The cost is $180.
