Miami Biennale will to host Exhaling Gnosis, the first major exhibition of works on paper by Michele Oka Doner. The exhibition will feature sixteen 40 x 60 inch handmade abaca paper pieces, seven totemic relief prints from organic materials, a series of prints made with Dykem spray paint on kraft paper, and two oversized books. Conceived by curator Peter Menéndez, the exhibition emphasizes the captivating beauty of these feral, organic works of art as they reflect on the imagery of the natural world, of plants, animals, insects, and are transformed into visual statements that take a Rorschach-like quality. Oka Doner is well known for her numerous public art installations, including A Walk on the Beach and From Seashore to Tropical Garden at Miami International Airport. Exhibition hours are Thurs – Sat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

New York-based artist Fernando Mastrangelo’s new work will open at Charest-Weinberg. Mastrangelo approaches sculpture as a communion of concept, form and materials, and he has become known for using unexpected materials that heighten the work’s critical effect. For instance, his Avarice, 2008, based on the Aztec calendar, was made entirely from white Mexican corn; and Felix, 2009, a life-sized statue of a Colombian coca farmer is cast from pure cocaine. For Black Sculpture Mastrangelo created exact molds based on the work of Frank Stella and Ad Reinhardt, which he cast out of compacted gunpowder. By forging the work of canonical artists in gunpowder, Mastrangelo simultaneously pays homage to the work of earlier iconoclasts and seeks to destroy them. The exhibition will be on view through February. Gallery hours Thurs – Sun from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment.

See an extraordinary exhibit that will showcase what historians, curators and collectors have for centuries declared the iconic Dutch artist’s “dirty little secrets.” The World Erotic Art Museum will unveil an assemblage of 20 of the only existing erotic etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn (1609-69). Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will unveil a new exhibition of large--scale works by American artist Will Ryman, as part of its renowned, annual visual art program. This is Ryman’s largest outdoor exhibition to date and includes three new monochromerose sculptures in blue, yellow, and red, each ranging from 5 to 30 feet in height. The sculptures are composed of painted stainlesssteel, stainless steel mesh, fiberglass resin, and nidacore, and the bright fire-engine red bloom will be the tallest ever created by Ryman. Accompanying the synthetic blooms, Ryman has made 25 oversized petals that will delicately float on Fairchild’s sereneponds and grassy areas, doubling as lounge chairs. On a whimsical note, Ryman will place 15 ants and 7 bees – all made of brass – perched high up in a number of Fairchild’s majestic trees, appearing as keen observers of the sculptures below. Will Ryman is internationally known for his large–scale figurative sculptures based on urban scenes and oversized flora. This exhibition harmonizes beautifully with Fairchild’s lush, tropical landscape designed by William Lyman Phillips, a key member of Central Park’s Frederick Olmstead architectural group. Fairchild Garden is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except December 25. Admission is $25 for adults, $18 for seniors, $12 for children 6--17 and free to children 5 and under and Fairchild members.

World Class Boxing is an exhibition space displaying contemporary art from the collection of Debra & Dennis Scholl. The 4,000 square foot space has a main gallery, a project space and the art book library of the Scholl’s. The space was founded in order to display large scale and commissioned works and to have more of the collection on display and accessible to the Miami art community. Each year, during Art Basel Miami Beach, the space unveils a commissioned series of works. For Basel’s 10th edition, WCB will show British artist Jack Strange’s g (2008) and Love Trips: a Triptych on Love by Jillian Mayer. Strange makes conceptual works in a wide variety of media, including sculpture, photography, video, works on paper, and performance. For g, a Macintosh laptop has a large ball of lead resting firmly and unyieldingly on the keyboard’s letter ‘g’. The effect is an infinite stream of ‘g’s stuttering madly across the screen, line after line and page after page – a typographic tic that terminates only when the laptop inevitably crashes. The centerpiece of Mayer’s Love Trips is a triptych entitled Everyone’s Been Lost at Sea a video installation comprised of three pieces: Temporarily Yours that establishes the triptych’s theme of private rituals done for others; endless lava, I wish for, the emotional center of the triptych; and H.I.L.M.D.A. which retells and reinterprets the manner in which Venus De Milo loses her arms. The talents of four art students from New World School of the Arts will be showcased in Hotbed Miami 2011, a performance-based exhibition. For this challenge, each student must conceive, plan and produce a one-day only installation – to be presented consecutively. Every artist participating in “Hotbed Miami 2011” must install overnight, present their piece to actively engage the crowds of viewers the following show day, and strike their piece immediately afterward to make room for the next artist’s work. Simultaneously A Piece of Me, an exhibition of visual conversations between established artists and art students, will be presented. Artwork from four renowned alumni of NWSA – Hernan Bas, Jen Stark, Loriel Beltran and Michael Vasquez – will be exhibited with a new, commissioned-work response to those pieces from four NWSA visual arts high school students in the form of a video art piece / installation. Frames and Documents: Conceptualist Practices. Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection will include over 60 pieces by 41 artists from different generations and latitudes, who share a common experience of promoting and transforming conceptualist practices, which have resulted in becoming an ever-present and driving force in contemporary art today. The exhibition overlaps geographically and chronologically several times, highlighting coincidences regarding the artist’s journey as historian both through an institutional critique (Frames) and through their capacity to question the ways in which we relate to memory (Documents). The works included in the exhibition highlight three distinct instances within the trajectory of conceptual art between the 1960’s and the late 1980’s. Curated by Jesús Fuenmayor and Philippe Pirotte. The brunch is for Art Basel VIP cardholders and by invitation. View the exhibition Thurs from 1 to 9 p.m. and Fri – Sun from noon to 5 p.m.

Architecture of the Air, a traveling exhibition about Christopher Janney’s work, will be on view with three exciting events planned during Miami Art Week. The exhibit highlights projects from Janney’s three principal areas of focus: “Urban Musical Instruments”, “Physical Music”, and “Performance Architecture,” exploring his concept of total immersion through models, photographs, drawings, video, and a site-specific piece “Touch My Building: Miami.” On Friday Janney will present a concert of studio music entitled “Disembodied Instruments (Dance Version)” with members of the A cappella group The Persuasions along with a group of special musicians from Boston and New York. On Saturday afternoon, Miami art/architecture critic Beth Dunlop will moderate a panel discussion with Janney and fellow artists Vito Acconci and Gustavo Matamoros. And that night there will be a screening of “What is a Heart?” which has been called a “meditation on creativity and mortality,” with a live set by The Persuasions and music by L.A.-based Y LUV.

MAM and UM’s Department of Philosophy will host Portraits and Death: Rendering Absence and Loss in Art presented by Cynthia Freeland, Professor and Chair, Department of Philosophy, University of Houston. Enrique Martínez Celaya’s Schneebett (Snow-bed) evokes the experience of Beethoven’s final illness. It is a kind of deathbed portrait with an absent corpse. Ironically, many famous artists live on through their death masks, and these are sometimes used for images by other artists. Gabrielle Leidloff, for example, has made haunting X-ray images of Goethe’s death mask. This lecture will examine artists’ renderings of absence and death, ranging from Edward Munch’s paintings of the sick room of his dying sister to actual renderings of the dead person including Monet’s of his wife Camille, Lucian Freud’s of his mother, Daphne Todd’s 2010 portrait of her mother, and some video portrayals of death by Bill Viola. Admission is free and open to the public; light refreshments following lecture.

Miami-based emerging photographer John Jansheski will host a preview party to show his work in advance of the opening of his studio in the Wynwood Art District at the end of 2011. Jansheski challenges the notion of conventional art, successfully blending the gaps between fashion, music, conventional art and photography into an artistic hybrid, collaborating with amazing and celebrated artists in the worlds of fashion, music and painting, such as Romero Britto, Zilando Freitas, Coldplay and Cintia Dicker. John views all photography as pure art, as he feels there is something truly special in the manifestation of a magnificent idea turned into reality; regardless of the medium. This exclusive event will provide an intimate look at the world through the eyes Jansheski.
