Alzheimer’s Care Committee/NOTABLES of Douglas Gardens
Sweet Smell of Success Black Tie Gala

Everything was coming up roses for Founder and Chairman Bella Goldstein and President Mickey Dworkin as they celebrated the NOTABLES’ 23rd annual Black Tie Gala, the Sweet Smell of Success, benefiting crucial Alzheimer’s programs at Douglas Gardens. Held in the dazzling Starlight Roof of the Miami Beach Resort & Spa, the Honorary Gala Chair and Guest Emcee was Channel 4 News Anchor Eliott Rodriguez, a devoted supporter of the NOTABLES and its mission.
Vice Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach, Lewis Thaler was Gala Chairman in loving memory of his wife, Madi Thaler. Gala Co-Chairs included Arlyn and Stephen H. Cypen, Ethel and Edward Dublin, Helen Gaulkin, Marianne and Warren Gilbert, Shirley Harris, and Bernice and Harold Sigman.
Gala Honorees were new Golden NOTABLES Betty Madigan Brandt; Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup; former Bay Harbor Islands Mayor Linda Zilber and Al Kroll.
The elegant Cocktail Party was underwritten by Isabel May who was also acknowledged for her generosity in endowing the May Memory Program at Douglas Gardens. Guests enjoyed a lavish caviar bar compliments of Marky’s Caviar. Other underwriters included The Slansky Family and George Stein. The 2009 Award recipients were Joan Gale, the Louis C. Fischer Award; Rita and Gerald Cohen, the Lester L. Goldstein Award, sponsored by Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour; and Sandra and Aventura Vice-Mayor Billy Joel, the Forge Award. Guests were entertained by an original NOTABLES tribute song by Vanessa Cohen.

The Gala also featured an exclusive Judith Ripka Designer Boutique and an extraordinary Silent Auction featuring a 12-day cruise from Holland America Line and a four-night stay at the new luxurious Radisson St. Martin, Resort and Spa.
In 1987, Bella Goldstein and her brother, the late Louis C. Fischer, realized the need for an Alzheimer’s care support group. Now there are more than 1,200 NOTABLE members ensuring that “until there’s a cure, there’s care.”
