Examining the Chinese Connection to the West
The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum at Florida International University will open East/West: Visually Speaking, showing the work of 12 Chinese artists whose art merges Eastern and Western visual languages.
Many of these artists were born or came of age during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and thus represent a generation of artists who experienced enormous change in Chinese culture. Caught between the dense weight of history and tradition, this generation is the first in many years to experience widespread connection to the West. As a result they have reinterpreted aesthetic visual traditions according to their perceptions and knowledge of European and American visual arts.
Each participating artist presents a multifaceted view of contemporary China as it struggles to define itself in the post-cultural revolution and its new place on the world stage. East/West: Visually Speaking is curated by Dr. Lee Gray, Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Artists in the exhibition are Cai Lei, Zhong Biao, Shen JingDong, Shi Liang, Sun Ping, Tang Zhigang, Ma Baozhong, Zhang Hongtu, Cang Xin, Guan Yong, and the Luo Brothers (Luo Weidong, Luo Weiguo, Luo Weibing). It will remain on view through September 11, 2011.
Join in the festivities for the opening on Wednesday, May 25, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Target Wednesday After Hours, the Frost’s monthly programming designed to complement its exhibitions.
The Frost Art Museum is located at 10975 S.W. 17th Street in Miami. The phone number is 305-348-2890. Visitor parking is directly across from the Museum in the Blue and Gold garages. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, although donations are encouraged.
