Allison Weiss Brady’s The Life of a Social Scribe
New York State of Mind
SocialMiami’s Social Scribe, Allison Weiss Brady, recently traveled to New York to receive an award from Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families, the number one foster care center in New York City. The honor was bestowed by Florida Governor Charlie Crist and paid tribute to Allison’s involvement with the organization for the last six years.
Ah, New York. I truly love the city. Chip and I spent a whirlwind week in Manhattan, catching up with friends and relaxing at the rooftop pool at SoHo House in New York’s trendy Meatpacking District.
An important reason for my being in the City was to attend an event hosted by the Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families at the Cipriani Wall Street. Guests included Olivia Chantecaille, spokesmodel for her family’s make-up line “Chantecaille,” artist Ann Duong, I-20 gallery owner Alice Judelson, Maplemint Enterprises event planner Alison Minton, and comedienne/writer Caroline Waxler. The event was emceed by CBS reporter Kristin Cole and Edwin Gould’s Linda Argila, who looked fabulous in Roberto Cavalli.
Next stop: The Hamptons. For those who are unfamiliar with The Hamptons, it’s a two-hour drive (without traffic) east on Long Island with an official high season that begins Memorial Day weekend. Manhattan’s high society summers there, and the parties do not disappoint. As in Miami, there are exquisite houses on the ocean and bay, great restaurants and nightlife, and fabulous shopping (but more in a Cote d’Azur relaxed way, than say, Paris couture).
We immediately went shopping and stocked up on ready-to-wear goodies at the new Intermix boutique in East Hampton. I picked up a filmy-knitted Missoni summer scarf for a party I was attending later that evening. Missoni colors are so fabulous; it’ll go with everything!
Just down the street, Blue & Cream, a popular boutique with an impressive collection of designers, was marking its fifth year anniversary. The party celebrated the 2008 spring and summer collection of Unruly Heir and was hosted by supermodel Maggie Rizer, known for her Prada, Oscar de la Renta, and Versace campaigns –- not to mention her charity work with DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS). The host committee was a who’s who of New York City’s hipster junior jet-setters, including Liam McMullan, Annabella Dexter-Jones, Leven Rambin, and Luigi Tadini with Tamie Peters Thomas and Jeff Goldstein.
MTV’s “The Hills” star Whitney Port, in town for several events, jetted by and picked up a skull-and-crossbones sweatshirt before heading off for her cover girl celebration of Social Life Magazine at Estate. Whitney recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone with the rest of “The Hills” cast (Lauren Conrad included), but it’s just her on this Social Life cover.
The “Hamptons Magazine” 30th Anniversary party was an afternoon affair at Jason Binn’s house, hosted by cover girl Kim Cattrall. At the entrance, Howard Stern’s fiancée Beth Ostrosky was chatting with Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York’s Jill Zarin, who was carrying the most adorable dog under her arm. In the Hamptons, even the dogs attend the most glamorous events! This one was particularly fun with an ice cream truck parked in the backyard doling out soft-serve ice cream with that chocolate sauce that hardens as soon as it hits the ice cream. Yummy.
The magazine party ended early so we grabbed a quick bite at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse in Bridgehampton before heading to the Social Life party at Estate, which was great! All of the society ladies were out in full force in a sea of summer blues, greens, and corals, wearing this season’s hottest little dresses. Of course it was 40 degrees that evening, so everyone was freezing. Thank goodness I brought the Missoni scarf!
We ran into Matt Heien and R. Couri Hay, who was escorting MTV’s “Making the Band” winner Donnie Klang. MTV TV host/Neutrogena spokesmodel Susie Castillo was there with her husband Matthew Leslie. They were totally cool. Sir Ivan Wilzig was in attendance as well, the banking heir with a cropped blond hairdo. Miamians might be familiar with the Wilzigs, as Ivan’s mother owns the World Erotic Art Museum on Washington Avenue in South Beach. Everyone calls their Hamptons estate “The Castle” and the “Sir” part of his name is self-appointed –- so I guess you can call me Princess Ali from now on. Ha… just kidding!
To recap, the city was great and the Hamptons were even better. Now, back in Miami, it’s good to be home despite the incredible humidity. I may need to head back to the Hamptons for another summer adventure –- maybe when the polo matches get underway.

Weiss Brady and her husband Chip Brady are members of Art Basel’s Junior Host Committee and Weiss Brady is a member of the Vizcaya Preservation Luncheon Founding Committee. She on the Board of Advisors at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice and she’s the only female on the university’s Football Board. Weiss Brady was also the sole recipient of the University of Pennsylvania’s 2008 Young Alumni of the Year Award, and serves on the Overseers board for the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
