Remembering HARVEY RUVIN
By Ron Magill, Zoo Goodwill Ambassador & Communications Director
The passing of Harvey Ruvin will leave an immense hole in this community. I first met Harvey over 40 years ago when I was a new zookeeper at the Crandon Park Zoo and he was a Miami-Dade County Commissioner. From the time he reached out to welcome me to the “County Family,” to all the times that he personally attended so many of the environmental and conservation programs that I would always see him at, he defined what it is to be a public servant. Though I was initially intimidated by his status as a Commissioner, he soon made it clear that he was a friend that I could depend on for anything that he could help with. He would send personal congratulations for any successes I experienced and would always encourage me. Though many people know him for his immense contributions as the County Clerk to the court system, I will always remember him as a dear friend and champion for the environment who set the bar for what all elected officials should strive to reach. He will be profoundly missed.
