Social Miami’s Art Basel 2012 Compendium

Artistically Social with Amy Rosenberg

This year, I was unceremoniously axed from the Chanel guest list after having received an invitation and confirmation. However, that did not throw me into despair. I managed to make it to a few swanky parties. White Cube’s annual beach party drew celebrities and hangers-on alike and featured a performance by the band Wild Belle. Book signings were the rage. Pharrell, Terry Richardson and Bruce Weber all had hordes at their signings. I also snagged an invitation to collectors Kathryn and Dan Mikesell’s party at their home and an invitation to dine with Russell Simmons at Allison Weiss Brady’s home.

Arts Miami with Anthony Japour

Each year the Art Basel Miami Beach fair affords one the opportunity to see and learn in greater depth the work of contemporary artists.

For this year’s feature, I decided to ask: “What could one buy from the six artists nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize?”

VIDEO: Aoki Akio Gallery at Art Basel

West Encounters East is a documentary produced by arts activist and collector Stella Holmes. The piece, due to be released by public television in 2013, studies the relationship between Japanese and Brazilian cultures as seen through the works of Japanese/Brazilian artists.

At Art Basel Miami Beach, Ms. Holmes visited the Vermelho gallery out of Sao Paulo, which is owned by Japanese/Brazilian gallerist Akio Aoki. The gallery displayed an installation by a native Brazilian with Japanese roots. The artist, Andre Komatsu, has an architectural background and created a three-dimensional piece from wood that adheres to his architectural understanding while also keeping with the clean, minimalistic nature of the Japanese aesthetic.
